Accessibility at Bath Abbey

We welcome everyone at Bath Abbey and aim to offer a space for all to enjoy the architecture, atmosphere and history. We are committed to making your visit as enjoyable and accessible as possible. Our friendly team of staff and volunteers are here to help - please just ask.

Carers and support workers receive free entry.
We are also a member of the B&NES Rainbow Resource Scheme and offer free entry to card holders and accompanying carers of this scheme.

Getting here

Bath Spa train and bus stations are approx. 10 minute walk away from the Abbey.
Accessible taxis include Abbey Taxis (01225 444444) and Bath Spa Taxis (01225 313131).
Surrounding pavements include both paved and cobbled surfaces. 

Parking

Bath Abbey does not have a car park.

The nearest accessible public parking is available at:
The Podium, Northgate Street, BA1 5AL (approx. 5 minute walk away)
Southgate Car Park, St James Parade, BA1 1TP (approx. 5 minute walk away)

Wheelchair access

Bath Abbey is wheelchair accessible. There is level access at the main entrance and throughout the Abbey's ground floor and the Abbey Shop.
The main entrance door width is 50 inches.
The Discovery Museum and toilets can be accessed via a ramp and lift. Lift width is 35 inches. 

Tower Tours have steps and are not accessible to wheelchair users.

A wheelchair is available to borrow free of charge. To reserve it in advance, contact the Verger Team at vergers@bathabbey.org or call 01225 303328.

Toilets

Accessible, gender-neutral toilets and baby changing facilities are available. Please ask a member of staff for directions.
Additional toilets are located through the Discovery Museum (accessible by lift or stairs).
A Changing Places toilet is available - please speak to a member of staff if you'd like to use it.

Neurodivergent visitors

Bath Abbey can be busy at peak times. For a quieter experience we recommend visiting:
- Before 10:30am
- After 4:30pm
- Weekday mornings (less busy than weekends)

Visitors with SEND

A Sensory Explorer backpack is available to borrow free of charge and has been designed to provide families with fun and helpful resources to explore the Abbey. Please ask at the Welcome Desk for more information. The backpacks are hanging behind the desk. Please drop them off outside the shop when you have finished.

Visitors with dementia

Bath Abbey is working towards being Dementia Friendly. The Abbey is a member of the Bath and North East Somerset Dementia Action Alliance and some of our staff and volunteers have attended Dementia Friends information sessions. We launched a Carers Café on 26th June 2024, which runs throughout the year. Please get in touch with us if you wish to find out more.

Visitors with hearing impairments

For those who use the hearing loop, the best places to sit to listen to services or the choirs are close to the centre aisle in the first three chairs each side. For best sound from the speakers please sit close to the speakers, in line with the direction it faces.

Assistance Dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the Abbey.
